Administration of the Revised Phoneme Perception Tests (PPT-R)

Two individual Phoneme Perception Tests (PPT-R) are available (i.e., Form A and Form B).  (See the Website for how to download the tests, the manual and Quick Start.)  Each screening test targets 5 different phonemes.  That is, Form A assesses perception of [m], [l], [z], [t], and [I] (“i” as in bit) and Form B assesses the perception of [n], [r], [s], [d], [i] (“e” as in beet).  The two screening tests can be administered at two different times (e.g., before and after remediation).

Each test takes approximately 10 minutes and requires administration in a quiet room.  The sound quality of your computer’s speakers or additional speakers should be sufficient.   Headsets may also be used by both the student and the examiner so that the examiner can monitor the responses of the student

Sound Quality and Speaker Information

The sound quality of your computer’s speakers or additional speakers should be sufficient.

  • If you prefer headsets, you will need two headsets (i.e., one for the students and one for you, the examiner) and a "splitter/Y-adapter" so that you can monitor the responses of the student.

  • Directions for performance on the PPT-R are pre-recorded, as is the test. The directions are also on the response form. As the student listens to a sentence and taps for the specified phoneme, the examiner marks that portion of the written sentence with a slash on the response test form. After the test is completed, the number of incorrect taps is subtracted from number of correct taps for each sentence, resulting in a percent correct for each phoneme as well as a total score. These scores (both for the individual phonemes and for the total score) can be compared to the norms of a normally developing second grade student. A student, of any grade above second grade, who scores are below that of a second grade student should be considered for further testing and/or remediation.
